Gardening Tips

Don't worry if you only have a small garden, you can still make it a beautiful feature of your home and have fun getting creative and learning at the same time! It can also be a great activity to get the whole family involved and encourage your children to eat the fruit and vegetables they've grown. While we will give you some guidance and tips below, one of the best ways to learn is to get stuck in, and in this case you'll get dirty as you get stuck into weeding or mowing the lawn! Don't worry, we still think you look great!

Essential Gardening Tools

Before we jump into the tips, here's a list of some essential gardening tools you might end:

  • Gloves
  • Shears
  • Garden Fork
  • Spade
  • Rake
  • Garden Hose
  • Watering Can
  • Wheelbarrow

Getting to Know Your Garden

It may sound strange, but how can you transform something you know nothing about? Allow yourself time to take a walk around your garden and take note of aspects like whether it's north or south facing, and where the top spots for the sunlight are. This will help you to decide what to plant where. You'll also need to check what type of soil you currently have to figure out what you can plant there. If you're unsure, take a sample of your soil to a local garden centre where they can advise you.

Planning For Your Garden

While you don't have to make an intense detailed step by step plan of what you want to do with your garden, it is a good idea. It will save you from getting carried away and buying lots of products and then not knowing what to do with them or if they're even suitable for your garden. Sit down and plan what you would like to grow and where the best place to grow it would be. If you're someone that likes a colour scheme too then this is a great time to factor that into your plans!

Planting

If you want your plants to grow nicely and last for a long time, it's a good idea to learn some planting skills. Before you plant anything in the soil, make sure to remove weeds and any sticks or stones you find in the area. You should also add some compost and fertiliser to help your plants grow bigger quicker! If you're unsure on how to plant something in particular, it's best to double check so you don't waste your time or money, but after a few times we're sure you'll become an expert!

Caring For Plants

Your plants will need to be watered and fed to ensure they grow nicely and last for a good amount of time. This is absolutely essential as if you get this step wrong, it can be the difference between your plants living or dying. Don't worry though, we're here to help you keep your plants thriving. You should water the roots instead of the leaves, as the roots absorb the water. A good idea is to give the roots a good soaking once a week and feed them every fortnight.

Encountering Wildlife

Not all wildlife is the enemy. If you see insects on your flowers, don't worry as they could be helping you. Birds eat some of the top pests in gardens including slugs and snails. Bees pollinate the food that we need in order to survive. It's a good idea to create a nice habitat for them where you can both share and enjoy the space and what nature has to offer!

Easy Things To Grow In Your Garden

As you're just a beginner in the garden, we're here to help make things a bit easier for you! It's been suggested that lettuce is one of the easiest things to grow. It can be scattered directly into your garden bed, and it can be grown all year round, even in the UK's unpredictable weather conditions! It may seem like a bland place to start, but when you see the different shapes and sizes of the lettuce leaves leaping up all over the garden, we're sure you'll be delighted! Also, you can have your very own homemade salads in the summer that have been freshly picked from the garden!
